Terminology Unplugged

  • IR or Infra Red

A security camera equipped with infra-red capacity is able to see and record images below the range of visible light. This is often referred to as "night vision." It is able to read the "heat emissions" from objects.

  • CCD Camera

The superior conduction ability in sensors and resolution capacity of CCD technology provide surveillance cameras with both greater separation of colors and clearer and more defined images. Having come from the expensive high-tech field of industrial development and application, CCD cameras are now price-accessible for business security and home security.

  • PTZ

This acronym is the first letter of three descriptive words - pan, tilt, zoom. They indicate the three additional functions available on a PTZ camera.

  • HDD

Not to be mistaken for hyperactive deficit disorder, this indicates a surveillance camera that uses a hard disk drive (HDD) instead of a tape or DVD disk.

  • Lux

Lux refers to the light level in which a camera is able to adequately capture images. See the table below for your surveillance camera's capacity. Alternatively referred to a candlelight.

  • Lens Size

Lens sizes for surveillance cameras tend to sit in the 3.6mm to 35mm range. This is below the norm of 50mm for a regular SLR camera, which aims to imitate what the unaided human eye sees. Consequently, these surveillance cameras give greater and lesser degrees of wide-angle coverage. The lower the number, the wider the angle.

  • EX View

EX View technology provides low-light performance and excellent infra-red response. This enhances or boosts the surveillance camera's low-light image-capture capacity.

  • Quad Processor

This piece of equipment divides your surveillance viewing into four screens simultaneously, one for each of four surveillance cameras, which you can connect to the quad processor. This gives you the ability to view all four camera sites simultaneously, instead of one at a time.

  • 4 or 8 Channel Switcher

The switcher enables you to view your multiple surveillance camera feeds sequentially. No manual switching from one to the other of your cameras, the switcher will do it for you.

  • Splitter

The splitter enables you to split the surveillance signal and send it to multiple video monitors simultaneously.

  • Multiplexer

The multiplexer enables you to record and display, or view, your surveillance camera feeds simultaneously.

  • LED

A Light Emitting Diode sends out a type of narrow-spectrum light, which creates a form of electroluminescence. The effect is a surveillance camera's enhanced ability to see or record in low light. The narrow-spectrum light may be infra-red, visible or near-ultraviolet.

  • Ethernet

An ethernet function allows you to  view your surveillance camera feeds via your web browser.

  • VCR Versus DVR

VCR technology is analog technology. DVR is the more recent digital technology. Digital technology enables you to run your surveillance feed through computer technology using USB ports and/or remote viewing, or remote witness, software.

  • Remote Witness DVR

Remote Witness technology means remote viewing of your surveillance feed through your computer-connected DVR. Remote viewing enables you to view or "witness" your live surveillance camera feeds when you are away from home or office - perhaps at a meeting or on vacation. You can view via the internet on other computers and handheld devices.

  • VGA Card

A VGA card is a Video Graphics Array card. Needed for heavy graphics use, as in video games. SVGA applies to a Super VGA card. A step up in capacity.

  • SuperGran
    Just kidding.
This is a kindly, often under-rated, blast from the past who has the time to bake yummy food like all sorts of pies and ignore your foibles and lack of manners.
