Security For Seniors

Baby Boomers - How secure are they?

Security For Seniors or “Who’s Looking After Ma and Pa Kettle?”

Summary

A new report by SEaPS, an online personal security and surveillance equipment store, identifies the real and increased security risks faced by baby boomers. “Lately, as these folk have crowded increasingly into the seniors’ demographic, they have made it clear they want to live in their own homes for as long as possible. And that means a lot more homes with seemingly vulnerable folk in them, looking like easy pickings for burglars. Now, more than ever, these people need a simple security plan to ensure their own safety.”

Text

Released: January 2nd, 2008.

- The trend is, seniors prefer living in their own home for longer.
- The fact is, seniors look increasingly like a good fit for that “vulnerability” criteria that burglars use when choosing their targets. It’s a matter of appearance, stereotypes and assumption.
- The fact is, many seniors still feel as active and capable as they used to and perceive themselves as anything but a vulnerable target for burglars. This means they tend to ignore the fact that from an external point of view, they have moved onto someone’s hit list.

“So, if you are a senior, and you are prepared to be realistic, what do you do?”

This is the simple question tackled in this report, which looks at:

  • the need for a reassessment of any senior’s personal security risk level and, in response;
  • a cost-comparison of a burglary or attack versus the five security options identified in the report.

The report provides a quick and easy comparison to cost:

  • each component of a burglary or attack, from the broken window used to gain entry to the senior’s house, through to medical costs for personal injuries; then
  • one or more security tools that seniors can select from the options list to best suit their situation, location and personal preference.

“Seeing your list and the cost side by side is a powerful way to honestly identify your security needs and to consider simple, inexpensive response options. Using figures and putting things into black and white has a clarifying effect. The truth will out and it can be a lot easier to make decisions and take action armed with that.”

That is the recommendation of this report, to list, cost and compare, then decide and act. Easy steps for people busy enjoying their retirement years who want to continue doing that uninterrupted by the inconvenience and distress of a burglary or attack.
